Distilling the Scene: Combining the Elements of Luskentyre Beach
Another gem on the western coast of the Isle of Harris, is Luskentyre Beach!
A stunning stretch of beach renowned for its pristine white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters. This picturesque beach is often hailed as one of the most beautiful in the world, boasting breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and islands of the Outer Hebrides.
It may also hold the accolade of "most photographed location on Harris" which makes creating a truely unique image rather challenging...
I was fortunate the first time I visited Luskentyre Beach. I wasn't aware of the grandure that it held nor its world beating credentials. I hadn't seen photographs of those who had visited before. I was sans camera, in the guide of friends and four legged companions.
It gave me the opportunity to "feel" this very special location for the first time, unhindered by necessity to seek out an image. Something I think that many photographers fail to appreciate, or perhaps fail to isolate themseves from; this wonder.
So with that in mind I made a plan to approach Luskentyre Beach (as a photographer) with a different perspective, that of Multiple Exposure Photography. Through practice I learned that certain landscapes, in the right conditions, work well when superimposed over themselves, and this location met those needs.
Multiple exposure photography involves laying two or more images onto a single frame, creating a composite image that blends different scenes or elements together. It gives the opportunity to capture the essence of a place in a single frame, creating unique and artistic compositions that offer a fresh perspective on familiar subjects.
The first in a series of images, this is an amalgamation of nine exposures captured in camera, in the scene, in the moment. Distilling the panoramic elements of Luskentyre Beach into a singular visual narrative. Tides cross paths, mountains bolster hills, depth lends familiarity. All beneath the texture of those magnificant white sands.
